West Nile Virus

Environmental Health staff provides Vector control services by providing education on mosquito control and West Nile Virus, as well as conducting active surveillance through mosquito testing and bird testing.

Mosquitoes are active now and may spread disease. West Nile virus and LaCrosse encephalitis are diseases that may be spread by mosquitoes in Marshall County.

Stop mosquitoes by eliminating mosquito breeding sites:

  • Empty the water from containers such as garbage can lids, buckets, abandoned swimming pools or anything else that can hold water.
  • Remove tires, refrigerators and any other equipment that may hold water.
  • Drain water from culverts and roadside ditches.

Protect yourself by:

  • Staying indoors when mosquitoes are active.
  • Installing screens on all windows and doors.
  • Wearing long sleeves and pants while in a mosquito-infested area.
  • Applying mosquito repellant, containing DEET, to your clothing. (Consult a physician about applying mosquito repellant to young children.)
